What Do I Say in a Community❓

You Don’t Have to Be a Great Conversationalist🎉
Have you ever walked into a community gathering, or joined one online, looked around the room, and suddenly forgotten how humans communicate?
You’re not alone. 😄
For some people, starting a conversation feels completely natural. For others, it can feel like trying to assemble furniture without instructions.
The good news? You don't have to be a brilliant conversationalist to connect with people.
You simply need to be interested.
Start With Questions
One of the easiest ways to begin is with a simple question:
• “How did you get involved with this community?”
• “What brought you here today?”
• “What are you working on these days?”
• “What do you enjoy most about being part of this group?”
People generally enjoy talking about things that matter to them. And you don't have to prepare a ten-minute speech before asking. 😉
Listen for the Next Conversation
Here's a little trick: listen for something you can build on.
If someone says, “I've been working on a new project,” you could ask:
“Oh, interesting! What kind of project?”
If they mention they recently moved to the area:
“How are you finding it so far?”
You don't need to be fascinating. Be curious.
Don't Worry About Saying the Perfect Thing
Conversations aren't auditions.
You don't need the perfect question, the funniest comment, or a fascinating story about the time you accidentally met a celebrity in an airport.
Just be present.
A genuine “That sounds interesting—tell me more” can take a conversation surprisingly far.
And Remember: Small Conversations Matter
Not every conversation will turn into a lifelong friendship, business partnership, or exciting collaboration.
That's okay.
Sometimes you simply make someone's day a little better by taking an interest in them.
And sometimes that five-minute conversation becomes the beginning of something much bigger.
So, the next time you're in a community and you're not sure what to say, don't focus on being interesting. Focus on being interested.
Ask a question.
Listen to the answer.
Ask another question.
And congratulations—you are officially having a conversation. 🎉🎉
Your challenge: The next time you attend a community gathering, start just one conversation with someone you don't know.
You might be surprised where that one little “Hi, how did you get involved?” can lead.

I like the idea of being interested, not focusing on being interesting! That takes a lot of the pressure off & maybe it will work for me too!😜
