The objective in social media marketing is not to "do social media."
The objective is to understand the market and become valuable within it.
The following principles apply whether you are working by yourself, or if you are managing a team.
Determine who your target market is!
This is crucial for your success, while also making the best use of your time, effort, and resources.
For example, let's say freelancers, independent professionals and small businesses are your target market.
Don't just scroll through X or LinkedIn or other social media platforms.
Start looking for specific conversations, replies, statements such as:
Freelancer problems
• "I have too many clients and can't keep up."
• "How do you remember to follow up?"
• "What's the best way to organize client information?"
• "I keep forgetting things."
• "How do you manage multiple projects?"
• "What's everyone using for project management?"
• "How do you track invoices?"
• "How do you stay organized as a freelancer?"
Independent professional problems
• Client follow-ups
• Lost opportunities
• Managing relationships
• Calendar overload
• Information scattered across tools
• Tasks falling through the cracks
• Remembering commitments
• Managing prospects
• Keeping track of conversations
• Knowing what deserves attention today
Small-team problems
• Communication
• Accountability
• Client management
• Information silos
• Too many apps
• Repetitive administrative work
• Missed follow-ups
• Poor visibility
• Lack of coordination
These conversations are marketing intelligence.
They're telling us:
What people need → how they describe it → what frustrates them → what solutions they already use → what they wish existed.
That information should directly influence your product, content, messaging and sales.
What have you found to be the most effective way to build relationships and grow your customer base?
