Part 2 - Find Where They Gather Now that you have a clearer picture of who you're trying to reach, the next question is: Where do these people actually spend time, find information, ask questions, and have conversations? This is the tricky part, since many businesses choose platforms that are popular and post there. They spend hours creating content without knowing whether the people they want to reach will ever see it. So don't start with the platform. Start with the people. Find Their Natural Gathering Places✨ Your target market may gather in many different places: • Social media platforms • Professional networks • Online communities • Industry forums • Reddit communities • Facebook groups • LinkedIn groups and conversations • Events and conferences • Webinars and podcasts • Industry publications • Newsletters • Local business organizations • Professional associations • Comment sections and discussion threads Not every location will be relevant to your particular market, so your job is to find out where your people are actually participating. Market research can help you identify where customers can be reached, while direct research can reveal more specific information about your particular audience. Don't Just Look for Numbers✨ A platform having millions of users doesn't necessarily make it valuable to you. You're looking for relevant conversations, not simply large audiences. A smaller community where your target customers regularly ask questions, share experiences, and discuss problems may be far more valuable than a huge platform where your audience is barely present. Look for places where people are: Asking questions. Sharing problems. Looking for recommendations. Discussing their industry. Comparing solutions. Sharing experiences. Helping one another. Those conversations are valuable because they can tell you not only where your market gathers, but also what matters to them. Social-media research can provide both quantitative information, such as engagement, and qualitative information about people's opinions, behaviors, and conversations. Practical Exercise✨ Go back to your target market you defined in Part 1. Now find 5–10 places where people in your target market gather. Create a simple research list: • Place • Who is there? • What are they discussing? • How active are the conversations? Spend some time observing each location. Ask yourself: Are the people I want to reach actually here? Are they having the kinds of conversations I need to understand? If the answer is no, move on. A Better Marketing Question✨ Instead of asking: “Where should I post?” Start asking: “Where are the people I want to understand already talking?” Because once you find those conversations, you have something far more valuable than a place to publish content. You have a place to listen. And that is where the next step begins. → Article 3: Listen Before You Speak✨ Now that you know where they gather, resist the temptation to immediately start promoting yourself. Instead, start listening. The conversations happening around you can become one of your most valuable sources of market insight....

It’s spot on to emphasize the importance of knowing where your audience gathers before choosing a platform. One actionable step you might consider is surveying your current clients or connections to ask where they find information and engage with others in your niche. This not only validates your assumptions but could also uncover less obvious spaces where your target audience is active. Have you thought about leveraging LinkedIn polls or direct outreach to gather these insights?
